Anthony OKS is a switch hitter — he delivers on both head nodding slappers and introspective headphone tracks with equal force. Not an easy feat, but Anthony OKS has been around for a while. Known as a member of Winnipeg’s illustrious rap group The Lytics, he has toured the world making music and performing for crowds of thousands. Through this project, he’s bringing it home on his debut solo EP “Take Time”.
Anthony OKS has been hustling since his first solo single, Cadillac ft. Cadence Weapon, dropped in June 2018. The track was instantly picked up by Toronto-based website Sidewalk Hustle, and Anthony OKS has since played on bills with Grand Analog, Shad and Cadence Weapon as well as at festivals such as Real Love Summer Fest in July 2019 and Bastid’s BBQ in September 2018. He also performed a solo set at the Varit Roppongi bar in Tokyo, Japan in April 2019. Amidst the collaborations, festivals and pop-up appearances, Anthony OKS keeps up with the latest jams by gigging around Winnipeg as a DJ.
Each of the six songs on “Take Time” unfolds like a chapter in a book, building on the last to create a well-rounded sonic experience. The EP has an introspective tone, it’s the work of an artist exploring the depths of his own past and what has led him to this juncture in life. Far from striking a negative or sombre note, the uplifting nature of the beats coupled with the introspection in the lyrics gives “Take Time” an optimistic edge. The first single,“Let it Fall ft. Joanna Majoko”, produced by Paalsh, was released in May along with an accompanying video. This track premiered on CBC Radio by Odario Williams on “After Dark” and was also picked up by Sidewalk Hustle. “All In” produced by Goldstripes also gets the visual treatment, with a video release date of January 12, 2020.
